A horticulture is a branch of a agricultural science where you will study about the plantation of fruits, vegetables, and seasonal dry fruits. Horticulture is not similar to agriculture. Horticulture is done by a horticulturist in a specific environment. 

Means in horticulture we planted fruits and vegetables in a specific area with suitable environment. If the environment is not suitable then we can make it suitable for us by technology.

But if we talk about agriculture. It can be done in any area where only water and sunlight is available. There is no any need of a specific temperature and environment as needed in horticulture.

Hence, the main difference between agriculture and horticulture is that in agriculture we need not to manage soil and environment but in horticulture we need a suitable soil and environment.

If we talk about the branches of horticulture. Then it has four branches.

  1. Pomology:- In this branch of horticulture you will study about fruits and vegetables.
  2. Floriculture:- The branch of horticulture that deals with the cultivation of flowers.
  3. Spices and plantation crops:- this branch of horticulture are in more demand in mountain area. In this branch a horticulturist grow black paper, coffee, vanilla etc.
  4. Medicinal and aromatic plants:- This branch of horticulture deals with those plants which is used in making medicine and cosmetics product.

Horticulturist is a term made from horticulture. If a person got jobs in the field of horticulture then that person are called a horticulturist.

In simple words, if anyone did a course of horticulture after 12th. And clear the entrance exam of horticulture can become a horticulturist.

Horticulturist is a person who studied about plant seed and vegetables. Means that those people who experts in cultivation and farming of fruit seed and vegetables seeds. Basically their main work is to maximize the growth of fruits, vegetables and also protect them from insects.

A horticulturist works on the research and development of fruits and vegetables. In other words, a horticulturist is a scientist of plants, fruits and vegetables. Their work is to study on the seed of fruits and vegetables to maximize the production.

To choose a horticulture career after 12th may be the best option. because the demand of this career option is very growing. As we discussed above that the horticulture is not like agriculture. A person who complete a horticulture course called a horticulturist. 

Now, what we will have to do to become a horticulturist? which course we have to pursue after 10th or 12h. So if anyone wants to become a horticulturist then they have to follow the following steps. Specially if anyone wanted to become a horticulturist in India then just follow the steps that is given below.

These are the following steps to become a horticulturist in India.

  1. To become a horticulturist take science stream PCMB after class 10th.
  2. You have to get at least 60% marks in 12th board exam.
  3. After 12th board choose B.sc in Botany, soil science or in biology.
  4. Either doing B.sc you can give an entrance test called Horticulture Common Entrance Test (HORTICET).
  5. According to your rank in HORTICET. you will get your college.
  6. And after completing your college. You can easily get jobs as an horticulture officer, an horticulturist scientist, researchers etc.

How long does it take to become a horticulture?

Basically a Bachelor's degree is an entry pass in horticulture field. If a person have a doubt that how many time takes to become a horticulture then the answer is about 5 years.

How long do you study to become a horticulturist?

Process no. 1:- To become a horticulturist you have to complete your Under graduate B.sc in Botany or Biology, or in Horticulture which is of 3 years. After that a 4 years of b. tech in horticulture.

Process No 2:- To become a horticulturist just after 12th. clear the HORTICET entrance test. After that a 4 years of college degree in horticulture as Floriculturist, Olericulturist, Pomologist, horticulture technician, horticulturist researchers, and horticulture officer.

List of courses after 10th to become a horticulturist in India


  • After class 10th board select science stream to become a horticulturist. Science stream includes Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, etc.
  • After completing class 12th board with PCMB. Choose B.sc in Botany, or Biology or in Agriculture.
  • After completing B.sc, for further studies you can choose M.sc in Botany, or Biology.
  • You can also do Ph.D or doctor in horticulture. But to take admission in Ph.D you have to clear entrance test.

Please Note that: If you want to become a horticulturist or a horticulture officer just after class 12th. Then clear the entrance test named HORTICET after 12th. After clearing this entrance you can get job easily.
