What do we call the region of a sound wave where the molecules are spread out?

What do we call the region of a sound wave where the molecules are spread out?

As we know that sound wave travels through a material medium (medium which consists of particles). But do you know how this particles of the medium helps the wave to propagate and travels through it. Lets see.

When any objects or body makes or produces sound. It travels through a material medium, present there. A disturbance produces in a medium which is in fixed pattern. Depending on the types of the medium the disturbance produces in different-different ways.

But here we only talk about longitudinal or transverse wave. which mostly used in the propagation of a sound wave.

When a sound wave travels through a material medium. It produces a fix pattern disturbance in the particles of that medium. And those pattern are in two different ways in two different region. first region are closed particles and second one is spread out particles. Hence compression are that region of a sound wave where the molecules are closed and we call rarefaction of that region of a sound wave where the molecules are spread out. see given fig.

What do we call the region of a sound wave where the molecules are spread out?

we have different-different questions in our mind like
  • When sound waves bend and spread out it is called?
Answer: compression and rarefaction.
  • What is the spreading of waves called?
Answer: Rarefaction
  • What is the name for the region in a sound wave where the particles are further apart than normal?
Answer: Further apart sound wave are called Rarefaction and Normal sound wave are called compression. But remember that are not normal, it has compressed a little.

Hence, the answer of all the above questions are same. That is compression and rarefaction.
